Have You Thought About Contraception?

Choosing correct contraception pills needs consulting from general practitioners at Clifton Hill Doctors

Choosing the right type of contraception can be a difficult process. It is important that you are aware of all the options available and the pros and cons of each.

The other thing to consider is that the best option for one person is not necessarily the same for another. There may be other personal and medical reasons which may influence your decision and this is something that can be discussed in a consultation with your doctor.

The choices available include:

  • Oral contraceptive pills
          • Either the combined pill (oestrogen and progesterone) or “mini” pill (progesterone only)
  • Contraceptive injection
          • Usually given every 12-14 weeks
  • Implants
          • Placed under the skin of the upper arm and lasts 3 years
  • Intra-uterine devices (IUDs)
          • Inserted into the womb from the vagina
          • Copper IUD (lasts 10 years)
          • Hormonal IUD (lasts 5 years)
  • Vaginal rings
          • Inserted by yourself every week into the vagina
          • Work in the same way as the combined pill
  • Barrier contraception
          • Male and female condoms
          • Diaphragms
  • Male and female sterilisation
  • Natural family planning

When thinking about contraception there is also the very important issue of protecting yourself against sexually-transmitted infections (STIs).   Apart from the male and female condoms none of the other contraceptive options in the list above will do that.   It is recommended to have regular STI check-ups if you are sexually active, have recently changed sexual partners and before starting a new relationship.
